This programme has been developed by ESANZ, industry and in partnership with the Western Institute of Technology Taranaki, WITT.

Qualification overview

The holder of the qualification is able to perform tasks involving a broad range of skilled applications applied in a wide variety of contexts, which may involve application of some discretion and judgement in selecting equipment, services or contingency measures. A core component of essential skills required to work at a hydrocarbon drilling operation related to health and safety; emergency procedures; creating, maintaining and enhancing productive working relationships; operating and maintaining ancillary equipment; conducting and maintaining derrick operations; trip casing; and trip piping, is included in this qualification.

 Entry requirements

  • 48 or more credits at NZQF Level 1, including 8 at NCEA Level 1 in English, 12 at NCEA Level 1 in Maths, and 12 at NCEA Level 2 from Science, Computing, Engineering
  • Equivalent NZQF Unit Standards
  • A Level 4 National Certificate or trades qualification in an engineering or technology field
  • Applicants will also be required to undertake a drug test, provide written references and a police check and attend an interview.
